Alan Doble Death

Alan Doble Death | Ormond Legend Passed Away

Ormond’s AFC champion, Alan Doble has passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2019 at the age of 77.

We found out about the death of Alan Doble through his obituary posted on Facebook by Ormond Amateur Football Club.

“One of Ormond’s great all-rounders (football & cricket) passed away last Sunday (15 Dec), aged 77 years – ALAN DOBLE.

Alan became an Ormond AFC champion in just 43 games after commencing with the U19s in 1961. He was a tremendous leader and a great ruckman with all the skills of a top VFL/AFL player.

– Member of 1963 Senior team (runners-up A Grade GF)
– Club Captain 1964
– 2nd Senior B&F 1964
– VAFA Big V 1963, 1964
– U17s coach 1967 (for part of the season)
– U19s coach 1971-74 (Premiers 1973)
– Ormond AFC Life Member 1972

Alan’s Amateur football career was cut short in 1964 in unusual circumstances – his amateur status was withdrawn after accepting out-of-pocket expenses whilst playing Sheffield Shield cricket for Victoria!

Alan Doble is one of only 22 people who have played 1st XVIII football and 1st XI cricket with Ormond. As an Ormond cricketer, Alan was a left-arm fast bowler who dominated the VSDCA competition from the late 1960s until 1980.

– Ormond 1st XI debutant 1957/58
– 177 1st XI games (606 wickets), 18 2nd XI games, 11 3rd XI games
– 5 wickets or more innings wickets – 47 occasions
– Best 1st XI performance 9/15 against Oakleigh
– Wickets per season Club record holder: 75 wickets
– 5 x 1st XI VSDCA Premierships
– 9 x 1st XI Bowling awards
– VSDCA Hatch Medal 1970/71 (Cricketer of the Year)
– North Melbourne District Cricket (1960/61 to 1966/67)
– Victorian Cricket Team (1964 to 1966, 5 games)
– Ormond CC junior coach (Premierships U16As & U12As)
– Ormond CC Life Member (1979/80), and inaugural inductee Ormond CC Hall of Fame (2017)

Wow, a sensational rap sheet for Ormond football and cricket – a true Legend of both clubs.

On behalf of the Committee, players, officials and supporters of the Ormond AFC, our sincere condolences to Lara (daughter) & Jason, Jack & Preston (his two grandsons being former Ormond junior footballers and Ormond CC players).

Watch papers for funeral details, and there is likely to be a memorial service for Alan at EE Gunn Reserve in January 2020.
