Elderly Canadian Resident Death – The authorities have confirmed the demise of an elderly Canadian resident man, aged 85 years, who drowned to death after the boat he was in capsized on Lake Erie off Crystal Beach on Sunday, July 26.
The elderly man was with his teenage grandson who was able to swim to the shore.
At about 11:30 a.m on Sunday, the emergency crews received a call of two boaters in distress, the Fort Erie fire Chief Ed Melanson said.
Fort Erie Fire Department rescue boats with crews from the RCMP, Niagara Regional Police and both the U.S. and Canadian coast guards searched for the second man after one swam to the shore.
He was spotted in the water by a U.S. coast guard helicopter at about 1:30 p.m.
The teenage grandson was assessed by paramedics with Niagara Emergency Medical Services but did not require hospitalization. Attempts to revive the elderly man were unsuccessful.
The incident remains under investigation.
