Graham Dawson Death – Obituary, Funeral, Cause Of Death
Graham Dawson, 60, died at the scene late on Tuesday night after the brittle roof of the Gregory Crinum Mine near Emerald gave way. His 25-year-old colleague was trapped beneath the rubble for more than four hours and had to be freed by rescuers.
He suffered severe crush injuries to his legs and pelvis and was taken to Rockhampton Hospital.
The men had been working to support the roof near the old conveyor drift area of the mine at the time of the collapse. They were among a small group working to prepare the mothballed mine for reopening later this year.
“That’s one of the sad things working in this industry, when you hear of something like this there’s a good chance you know them,” the colleague said.
The roof of the Crinum mine has been notoriously weak and was the subject of multiple safety reports in the years before the underground mine was shuttered by its previous owners, BHP Mitsubishi Alliance.
Issues were also raised about the large volume of underground water seeping into the mine from the surrounding strata, further interfering with the stability of the walls and roof.
Japanese company Sojitz bought the 24-year-old mine in 2019 and this year employed Mackay-based company Mastermyne to recommence operations on a $600m, seven-year contract in May.

Shortly after the contract was signed, Mastermyne advertised for miners with little to no experience, whom the company intended to train on the job.
In August, Mastermyne managing director Tony Caruso said the ASX-listed company expected to mine its first coal by the end of the year.
The company intended to employ 180 staff to extract 1.5-1.8 million tonnes a year over six years by using the bord-and-pillar method, which involves digging smaller sections of coal and using untouched material as pillars to support the roof.
Mastermyne shares fell more than 18 per cent to 90c on Wednesday on news of the tragedy.
Queensland Mines Inspectorate has commenced an investigation into the incident and mining operations have been suspended until further notice.
It’s the first mining fatality in Queensland since January last year and comes 18 months after an explosion at the Grosvenor mine injured five workers.
