Reactions And Sharing On Jay Melosh Passing
A wonderful mentor of mine, Jay Melosh, passed away. He was the reason I applied to Purdue University for a PhD. He was instrumental in helping me get the postdoctoral position at the University of Bern. I am at a loss for words. @unibern @PurdueEAPS

I’m genuinely so saddened by this news. Jay Melosh, though we only exchanged a few emails and met a few times in person, is the professor that helped me realize I wanted to study planetary geology and impact cratering. He will be deeply missed. ❤️

None of us were ready to lose Melosh the planetary science giant. But more than that, we were not ready to lose Jay the friend.

Jay Melosh was one of my professors when I was a grad student at the U of Arizona and I got to know him a bit better when I interviewed for a faculty position at Purdue. He was a genuinely nice guy and, of course, a giant in the field of cratering… very sad news.

Sad to hear of the death of Jay Melosh. He gave great talks to @UASEDS. One of my favorite Jay memories was when we were working on PTYS homework in @UArizonaLPL. Jay was preparing for a grad student field trip and asked us “Does anyone know how to say ‘Don’t Shoot’ in Spanish?”
