56-year-old Jerry Sanders has been arrested by Memphis police following a deadly house fire that claimed the life of Gregory Fowler in North Memphis on Sunday, May 24, 2020.
Firefighters arrived a home in 1100 block of Gerard Street around 9:30 p.m. and found a man later identified as Gregory Fowler, battling the fire inside the home.
The fire was reportedly brought under control 15 minute after the firefighters arrived the scene. Fowler was taken to the burn unit at Regional One in critical condition and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Fowler suffered from second-degree burns and smoke inhalation.
Sanders has been charged with aggravated arson and first-degree murder. Sanders is being accused of killing Fowler. According to affidavit, Sanders killed Fowler because he was upset with Fowler over a theft and wanted him to leave the house.
Sanders poured gasoline from the kitchen to the bedroom door of Fowler, then set the fire with paper towels, police said.
Sanders also admitted to police that he started the fire.
