Reactions And Sharing On Social Media Concerning Johan Wilke Passing

WHAT A SHOCK.  The citizens of Earth say goodbye to Johan Wilke – suddenly and almost confusingly.
One of the greatest photographers to come out of SA… your work was, is and forever will be a spectacular testament to your talent, passion and exceptional vision. I admired your work usually with a jaw drop and a gasp in almost every frame. May your lense grant you infinitely beautiful shots of heaven ?

Today I heard about the passing of a very dear photographer friend and I am devastated.  Johan Wilke was someone who I worked with so often with the Rooi Rose Magazine team that we became like a family, he made set life so much fun and always went the extra mile for his clients. I will miss laughing with him. I will miss chirping him. I will miss calling him “Oom”. Rest In Peace Dear Johan. My condolences to his daughter Betsy and family

R.I.P Johan Wilke
my first employer after graduating. An iconic fashion and beauty photographer who will be remembered for his kindness. Although his studio was crazy busy he always made time to help those who needed it, photographers and non-photographers. Johan showed me that it is possible to work for yourself and to make a living with your camera. Johan, his art and adventures will be missed by many. Thank you for everything. If you have time enjoy his work.

When I was an 18 year old student I was asked by a fellow student if he could take my photo for a portrait assignment I was not keen at all but he said I was different with freckles and red hair I eventually said yes, as he asked so kindly. Johan Wilke I followed your career and always admired your talent. RIP and thank you for spoiling us with your magnificent work.

We have lost a great photographer. Johan was one of the first photographers I assisted while I was still a student at Rhodes University. He took this photo of me a few years later for SARIE Tydskrif, Condolences to his friends and family.

Hey Johan may you RIP ,Ive looked up to you since we studied together at PE Teck in the 80’s where i first met you and you were my mentor when it came to Documentary photography.i then assisted you for 5 or more years in the 90’s at your Bree street studio in Cape Town , You taught me to be an all round photographer. You could photographed any subject from Fashion ,food ,products, action any advertising ,interiors ,beauty and all with a passion for perfection and pushing yourself to do better than the client expected. You taught me that photography was never about the money but about the passion for creating the best image that you could produce ,not for the client but for yourself and i have never in my 40 years as a photographer see anyone that loved photography more and did it with as much passion,The world has lost one of the true greats in the world of photography an unsung Hero and i wish i had made the effort to see more of you in the last few years and wonder what great art you would still have produced over the next few decades. You are missed by many many people more friends than you yourself would ever have imagined.I do wish for you to be traveling the universe with a Leica M4 and a 35mm f2 lens capturing the decisive moments you experience in the next dimension, may your images live long in the world of photography and may you be appreciated by the world out there for your true greatness in the capturing of the decisive moment in the true analog sense of the word. your dear friend Graham Abbott ,i will miss you lots 🙁
