Mickey McDonough Death – Obituary, Funeral, Cause Of Death
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Mickey McDonough. The best husband, father, grandfather, friend and boss so many of us had the pleasure of sharing our lives with. For almost four decades, he has been a common sight around historic downtown Bessemer, walking from United Textiles to see his friends at the Bright Star, Loyle Seymour Jewelry, The Paisley Pig, Simmons Sporting Goods and anywhere else he met someone new. Mickey loved to meet new people and his ability to make friends was enviably easy for him. Talking to him was also remarkably comfortable. We loved to listen to his stories about growing up in Montevallo, enlisting in the US Navy in the sixties, living in California and finally settling back in Alabama to raise his two sons with his wife Glenda. You could also hear some fantastic tales about military pilots, as planes were one of Mickey’s favorite subjects. His most favorite subject was his family.
His wife Glenda, his sons Richard and Steve, Steve’s wife Glennis and his three grandsons Sam, Jake and Tommy. If you were really lucky, you got hired on at United Textiles and promptly adopted into his family. Mickey’s generosity towards his family and friends knew no bounds. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for the ones he loved. While Mickey’s physical presence wasn’t large, his personality was enormous! He could walk into a room and be the center of your attention within minutes. But Mickey’s heart was the biggest part of him. For those of us blessed to know Mickey McDonough, to be related to him by blood, friendship, employment, his passing is leaving behind a hole that can never be filled.
Our hearts are broken to know that he won’t be strolling into the front door of the business he started so many years ago, or hustling down the street (faster than some folks his age can walk) to meet a friend for coffee or a meal. For his family, there is an empty chair at the table. For his employee’s, there’s a void in the day, usually filled by Mickey walking in and setting everything into high gear. Even with the grief we feel now, Mickey has left us with so much. United Textiles continues to be a bright spot in the city of Bessemer. Two more generations of the McDonough family will continue on traditions of kindness and generosity that Mickey and Glenda are so well known for starting.
doubt there is a single family member or an employee (past or present) that doesn’t have at least one story of how Mickey or Glenda provided help or encouragement to get them out of a bad spot. Mickey McDonough left his mark. We continue on, remembering his patriotism, his kindness, and his generous nature. Rest in peace, our friend. We’ll take a walk around the block, just for you! Please keep the McDonough family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time.
