A woman died in an apartment fire early Tuesday morning (Aug. 24) at 1126 Washington St. in Burlington. Two other occupants were injured.
Samantha M. Hoenig, 44, was removed from the burning structure by firefighters. She was treated at the scene by paramedics then transported to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. She died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the fire, officials said.
One firefighter was also injured at the scene and was being treated at the hospital.
Burlington fire and police department arrived on the scene at 7:04 a.m., two minutes after the initial fire call. At the scene, they found a two-story apartment house engulfed by heavy smoke and flames jutting out from the structure.
Initial 911 calls reported people trapped inside the house. Dispatchers worked with the callers to obtain information on their locations as police officers and firefighters worked outside to evacuate the building and bring the fire under control.
The four-unit apartment house, owned by Wilson Rentals of Burlington, sustained extensive damage and is considered a total loss. The property is insured.
Three of the four units were occupied, with a total of four occupants. Two occupants were treated and released for injuries sustained in the fire. A fourth occupant escaped uninjured and left the scene before police arrival.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Burlington police and fire departments and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office. It is not considered suspicious at this time.
Eleven Burlington firefighters initially responded to the call and were assisted by five West Burlington firefighters responding on automatic aid. Burlington police officers and deputies from Des Moines County Sheriff’s office assisted with injured victims and ground operations. Superior Ambulance, Alliant Energy, and 1-800-Board-Up provided vital assistance at the scene.
