Vaughan Jones, 67, was a brilliant Fields Medal-winning mathematician who discovered a relationship between Von Neumann algebras and geometric topology (later important in the development of dual models in physics). He was also a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Vaughan Jones was a native of New Zealand who received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Auckland and earned his doctorate from the University of Geneva. He is survived by his wife, Martha Jones, associate professor of medicine, heath and society, and three children. We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased.
